Accessing Public Services Workshops

Public bodies have certain legal duties to provide health, social care and other services for children and/or young people with disabilities, but families can find it difficult to access these services. A programme has been developed which includes an Accessing Public Services Toolkit and workshops to accompany the toolkit.

By the end of the workshop parent/carers will be able to:

  • Identify commonly occuring problems facing families accessing services and recognise different types of dispute
  • Come up with problem solving approaches to these problems
  • Use a number of template letters when corrosponding with public bodies

The workshop includes a number of case studies relating to direct payments, Disabled Facilities Grants, residential placement and school transport.

Dr Melanie Brown

Dr Melanie R Brown  – I started my professional career as a teacher, quickly moving into the area of Special Education. In 1987 I went to the Petö Institute, Budapest to train for four years in the field of Conductive Education (CE). Since this time I have remained working at NICE which is a charity specialising in working with children and adults with neurological movement disorders. In 2001 I gained my PhD in the field of Conductive Education.

Through my involvement with Conductive Education, and in my career as a conductor, I have gained a great deal of experience from the families, children and adults I work with. As CE works at a neurological level my passion is for seeking ways to help teach people to use the capacity they have and grow this through movement based tasks.

On a day to day level, whilst being in the role of CEO, I have remained a practitioner and run regular sessions for families. I am fortunate enough to be able to provide consultancy support for a number of centres here in the UK as well as internationally. I also teach at both under-graduate and post-graduate level in conjunction with Birmingham City University. All of these areas help drive my passion for understanding human learning and development and how we can best support the children and adults we work with.
